Guides / VPN vs proxy — plain differences that matter

VPN versus proxy — a practical comparison

Marketing sometimes uses “proxy” and “VPN” loosely. Technically they are different. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right tool — and read store listings more carefully.

Proxy in one sentence

A proxy forwards some traffic (often for one app or protocol) through another server. Encryption and coverage depend entirely on how that proxy is built; many classic HTTP proxies do not protect the whole device.

VPN in one sentence

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel at the network layer for traffic the OS sends through it. 4U uses the system VPN APIs on iPhone and Android so supported apps can share that tunnel while you are connected.

What to prefer for everyday privacy

  • Want encryption plus broader app coverage on a phone → VPN app
  • Need a special routing rule for one desktop tool → a proxy might still appear in niche setups
  • Want free try-without-signup → 4U’s timed free session is built into the VPN app

Product labels in stores vary. Always judge by permissions, privacy policy, and real behavior — not only the word “proxy” or “VPN” in a title.
