Guides / VPN for public Wi‑Fi — cafés, airports, hotels
Safer browsing on public Wi‑Fi
Open Wi‑Fi is convenient, but other devices on the same network can make casual browsing riskier. A VPN encrypts your traffic between your device and the VPN server, which helps on untrusted networks.
Why public Wi‑Fi needs extra care
Café, airport, and hotel networks are shared. You often cannot verify who runs the hotspot or who else is connected.
A VPN does not replace good habits — strong passwords, OS updates, and avoiding sensitive logins on clearly suspicious networks — but it adds a protected tunnel for your traffic.
Practical checklist
- Connect to Wi‑Fi, then turn on 4U before opening banking or mail apps
- Prefer HTTPS sites (padlock in the browser)
- Turn off auto-join for unknown networks when you can
- Disconnect the VPN only after you leave the hotspot if you want the tunnel the whole time
What a VPN does not claim to do
A VPN cannot make a malicious hotspot “safe” by itself, and it cannot stop phishing sites or malware you install. It helps protect data in transit on the network path you control less.
Security tips are general guidance, not a guarantee against every attack. Use 4U together with normal device hygiene.
